Baby Showers For Adopted Babies Information - Baby Showers for Adopted and Second Babies

There are several modern circumstances that occur quite frequently among new families in which someone might ask if it is appropriate to throw a baby shower. Two such areas occur among families who are adopting or who are expecting their second (or even third, fourth or fifth) child. In today’s world, both of these occasions are perfectly acceptable times to throw a party, but the rules governing baby showers may have to be adapted somewhat.

In the case of the adopted child, a baby shower should be planned after the child’s arrival at the home. Adoptions can be quite a lengthy process with a lot of road bumps. Parents who are trying to adopt almost inevitably come across some very discouraging situations in terms of timing and the work involved, so it is best to hold off on the celebrations until after the child arrives. Remember in your planning, however, that although the new mother has not gone through the process of birth, the addition of a new child will still require quite a bit of adjusting, and therefore consideration will need to be made for the new family’s privacy requirements.

Another special circumstance which can occur is when someone you know adopts a child into the family but because of the child’s age, the shower may not necessarily be a BABY shower. Children are often adopted at ages when they are no longer infants. In such a situation, it is fairly easy to adapt the traditional baby shower to incorporate the circumstance. Consider throwing the shower as a kind of birthday party for the child. Involve your children and the children of others in the welcoming process. For all adopted babies and children, it is important to find out the age of the child and let the guests know so the gifts are appropriate for the child’s age.

Many people wonder if it is appropriate to throw a shower for a family expecting a child but not their first. Some special circumstances include moms who were single with their first child but are now expecting a new child in a new relationship among others.

In such a case, it is important to be familiar with the tradition of the baby shower. A new baby is a very costly prospect, and showers were designed to give the new parents a chance to get gifts that would take some of the bite out of the expenses. Second children often arrive to families that are prepared, with all the necessary equipment available thanks to their older siblings. Take older siblings into account- they are often feeling quite traumatized by the arrival, and seeing the new baby receive a bunch of presents in addition to all the attention can be even harder. Try to remember to include the older child and ask guests to bring a gift for the older child.

The baby shower of today is more a celebration than a practicality. Second children are just as much an event to celebrate as first, and you should feel free to throw a baby shower for any new arrival of a life to be celebrated. The only real adjustment would be in the gifts. The second time around, gifts might take the form of boxes of diapers or wipes instead of the more traditional gifts of baby equipment and blankets, which the parents will probably already have thanks to being experienced in the area of parenthood.
